What is the General Medical Council?
The General Medical Council is a body registers doctors to practise medicine in the UK. They also govern and implement the PLAB examination.
What is the entry requirement for the PLAB examination?
Before you apply for the PLAB examination, you must satisfy the following criterions:
- A recognised medical qualification
- If you are outside the European Economic Area, you need to pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test
- 12 month clinical experience at a postgraduate level from a hospital approved by the medical registration authority in your home country. You may apply for the PLAB exam without this 12 month experience however you will need to undertake Foundation Years Training in the UK to compensate.

What are the fees for the PLAB examination?
The fee, as of 2008, is £145 for PLAB Part 1. Refugee doctors are exempt from paying the fee.
Will I be guaranteed a job after I have completed the PLAB examination?
No, the UK medical job market is very competitive at the moment. You must take this into consideration when undertaking your PLAB exam.
